MACRO & MICRO FILMING

Dark field macro bench
Macro filming facility

Spring 2019 saw the arrival of a large lump of rock at our studio in North Wales - a 2 tonne granite surface table to be precise!

This was to form the basis of our newly upgraded macro/micro facility - redesigned to achieve higher, vibration free magnifications of up to x 50.  It's also designed to work either horizontally or vertically.

We can use micro Nikkor and Leitz Photar lenses with excellent results or for higher magnifications we use Nikon CF Plan objectives with longer working distances (160TL)

Macro

Ilumination can be dark field, reflected light or a combination of the two.  We have taken special care to develop methods of precision light placement using fibre optics fed from LED sources.  Fibre optic ring lights are also available to control shadow extent.  Background illumination can be projected at lower magnifications for added realism.

A special feature of the bench is the motorised control of all camera movements (X Y + Z axes, plus rotation).  This is achieved using joystick control for real time camera movement using linear DC motors or by stepper motors for timelapse and predetermined camera movements.

The profiles for these can be precisely adjusted for ramping, mid-shot variations etc. and can be reloaded for repeats as necessary.

We will be exploiting these facilities during the summer so please keep visiting as we add shots to the macro gallery.

Net Spinning Caddis Larva  (Hydropsyche) filmed inside its case, building the net and finding prey

Black Fly Larva and Pupa  Watch as the adult fly emerges, jet propelled by a bubble of air

Both species Filmed using the turbulent water system on the Ibex macro bench

MINIATURE CAMERAS

can show creatures not easily seen

and our "snorkel rig" does it without disturbing them

Canon 5D on rotary timelapse drive

TYPE 2  STEPPER MOTOR DRIVE FOR

timelapse

controlled movement

jerk free start

accurate repeatable camera moves

laptop controllable via dedicated software  (through USB link)

profiles designed on the laptop can be stored in the motor controller (up to 8 or optionally 16 separate proflies can be stored

multiple stepper motors can be controlled simultaneously

(each needs its own controller)

PC control offers accurate adjustment of:

jerk free start characteristics

rate of acceleration

target speed

directional number of repeats

graphical representation of profile

selectable units - degrees, millimetres and steps

easy removal of the stepper motor drive from the track rail means it can also be used as a stand alone unit for rotary timelapse (pan or tilt)
